Could you be a British Psychological Society Volunteer Student Ambassador?

As a BPS Volunteer Student Ambassador, you'll enhance your employability skills while supporting your university community.

With support from the BPS Careers Team and our BPS Branch Network, you'll act as the voice of the BPS at your university, where you'll develop valuable skills for your future career while networking with professionals in the field.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference and grow as part of the psychology community.

What does a Student Ambassador do?

As a Student Ambassador we encourage you to use your own ideas and creativity to see what works best at your university. Here are some ideas:

  • Introduce yourself as a BPS Student Ambassador: Reach out to your careers team and psychology department to discuss any initiatives where you could get involved
  • Promote Careers in Psychology: Share BPS careers and membership related resources within your university. Set up a notice board or share an electronic poster
  • Freshers and Careers fairs: Organise a stand or virtual space (if held online) where you can introduce yourself and promote the BPS
  • Lecture shout outs: Speak to your course team about opportunities to organise a talk about what you do as a student ambassador, your university experience, who the BPS are, and careers with a psychology qualification (resources and support will be provided)
  • Activities for Students: Provide BPS careers related resources to students at activities you organise. This could include coffee catch ups, movie evenings, games nights etc

What is the branch committee?

The Branch Network foster connections among members within nations, regions, and local areas to build psychology communities that:

  • Offer expert help
  • Boost the local spotlight on psychology
  • Share knowledge and practices that are backed by evidence
  • Encourage teamwork across different fields
  • Help grow BPS membership

Some branches also host annual conferences, collaborate with universities, and offer opportunities for students to get hands-on experience in organising events or managing communications.

Each branch has its own unique approach, but all share a commitment to building strong local psychology communities. From networking opportunities to practical experience, there's something for everyone.

How many hours should I volunteer for?

It's entirely up to you, but we encourage you to spend around 2 hours per week to your role. You can generate ideas, align with the themes we set each month to develop activities, and connect with your careers and employability team, among other initiatives.

Will I get to meet other BPS Student Ambassadors?

Yes, there may be ambassadors at your university, within your region and you will meet ambassadors by attending online monthly catch ups.

What will I receive as a BPS Student Ambassador to support me with activities?

You will receive online training including a live workshop where you can meet you fellow ambassadors, branch representatives and the BPS careers team. You will also receive a support pack which will include resources to ensure you are equipped for your role. You can request further resources from us if required. We also have a small budget allowance for activities you would like to organise. For you to receive a refund this must be agreed with us before your activity takes place.

If I want to attend a BPS conference organised by a Division will my costs be covered?

No, as there are many Student Ambassadors and unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to cover the cost for all ambassadors.

No, once you have accepted the role you will register, and we will add you onto student membership. As long as you are a BPS Student Ambassador you will receive free student membership.

How will I find out if I have been successful in my application to become a Student Ambassador?

We will inform you via email in July.

If successful, how long will I be a Student Ambassador for?

Can I put my Student Ambassador role on my CV or on job/ further study applications?

Yes absolutely! Speak with your Careers and Employability Service who can support you with how to present your Student Ambassador role on your CV, and on applications for work or further study. You could also use examples from your experience at interviews.

Can I put the BPS down as a reference for a job role?

No, we cannot fulfil the reference request due to the large number of student ambassadors and insufficient proximity to provide detailed answers.
