Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities: outcomes for parents and their children
Author: Gemma Castleman
The Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities (Marilyn Steele) parenting programme has been adapted for the UK by the Race Equality Foundation.
This piece of research sought to evaluate the outcomes for parents and their children within one urban local authority in terms of feelings of parental competence, stress levels, isolation and any significant changes in parent's perceptions of their children's behaviour.
In addition it sought to clarify if young people themselves perceive any changes in their behaviour and if their parent's training has any impact on their levels of self esteem and self efficacy.
A comparison group design was used with participants being allocated to an intervention or comparison group with a range of parental and child measures at Time 1 and Time 2 to evaluate outcomes.
Mixed ANOVAs were used to consider any significant effects of the intervention and are currently being interpreted.
