A father and son team, with help from psychologists, have released a new technology to help children and young people practise mindfulness. Developed by John and Liam Murphy, Stix Mindfulness gives children and young people handheld remotes which help talk them through mindfulness exercises and activities.
The mindfulness activities were created alongside Brunel University academics Dr Elena Antonova and Professor Veena Kumari, and the remotes and companion app have also been tested in a four-week acceptability and feasibility study in a school. This study found that all of the children would recommend the product, and 86 per cent found their mood improved after practising the activities.
The inspiration for Stix came from Liam Murphy's experience of growing up with a brother with ADHD, and he wanted to explore alternatives to medication and developed the idea while at university. 'We believe that mindfulness is an essential tool for children's mental health and wellbeing, and our aim is to make it accessible and engaging for children everywhere.'
