Neurodiversity champions recognised in nominations

Company led by Chartered Psychologist Nancy Doyle up for diversity award.

10 June 2016

A company which aims to support and improve the career potential for neurodiverse adults has been nominated in the UK's largest diversity awards. Genius Within was started four years ago by Chartered Occupational Psychologist Nancy Doyle, who recently appeared in the BBC series Employable Me.

Doyle set up the company with an aim to help the neurodiverse people, including those with dyslexia, ASD and dyspraxia, who make up 8 per cent of the working population and 28 per cent of the long-term unemployed. She explained what the group has achieved so far: 'Our evaluation with in-work clients, who come to us because their work performance is suffering, shows that 88 per cent are still in work one year later and the remaining 12 per cent have moved on to work that suits their skills. We believe that neurodiversity is an untapped talent in the UK workforce, as showcased in BBC2's Employable Me programme.'

Genius Within also provides cognitive skills support in 11 UK prisons, bringing evidence-based coaching to prisoners as well as addressing social exclusion. Nancy and her team help them to build on their clients' existing skills and find their career aspirations based on their strengths. The company, nominated for an award in the Community Organisation category of the National Diversity Awards, employs eight psychologists out of a staff team of 19.

Doyle, who also convenes the Neurodiversity and Employment Working Group for the British Psychological Society's Division of Occupational Psychology, said: 'I have been overwhelmed with the reception our work has received from UK employers, the DWP and MoJ.  This nomination was a complete surprise to me, but I feel it reflects the hard work of the extremely talented staff team that have joined me in sailing the Good Ship Genius. I am thrilled for them – they carry the flag of professionalism, integrity and positive psychology everyday in their work.'
