Mental health of working-age people declining

According to the Health Foundation report, the mental health of the working-age population appears to be getting worse.

07 March 2025

A recent analysis from The Health Foundation has revealed the mental health of working-age people appears to be getting worse. It found more than 10 per cent of those aged 16 to 64 reported signs of poor mental health, with greatest increases in younger people aged between 16 and 34. Those with lower-level qualifications, those outside the labour market and those living in Scotland and northern England were more likely to report mental health conditions.

President of the BPS Dr Roman Raczka said the findings made for worrying reading. 'The economic and human cost of poor mental health should not be underestimated, with over two million people on mental health waiting lists in England alone. For too long people have paid the price for a lack of investment in mental health services, both in terms of prevention and support.'
