The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) has announced a proposal to increase its registration fee by almost 20 per cent. The BPS has strongly opposed this increase, to £117.74, in the face of the cost of living crisis.
The Society has consulted members on these proposals – with many members of the Society required to register with the HCPC as a mandatory requirement. In a statement the Society pointed out that wages have not kept up with inflation. 'We know there has been wide-scale reduction in real terms wages for a number of years across many sectors where psychologists work, including the health and social care sector. Many HCPC registrants are NHS workers where wage growth has not kept up with the soaring rate of inflation. This proposed increase could have a damaging effect on recruitment and consequently add further pressure to already struggling staffing levels.'
An HCPC consultation on the proposed increase closes on Thursday 15 December and can be found online.
