Dr Braham, a consultant psychologist at plans4rehab, describes the organisation's work. 'We're a small unit providing specialist care for a range of client groups with acquired brain injury and complex needs which often includes adjustment and other mental health difficulties. The centre of our activity is at Barclay House in Leicester which contains 28 beds (of which six are hospital beds) and a therapy suite which includes a superbly equipped gym. The purpose of Barclay House is to provide bespoke, expert rehabilitation following a brain injury and to maximise the individual's potential. It is a specialist rehabilitation service which plays a vital role in maximising recovery and supporting safe transition back to the community. We get referrals from the major trauma units in the region. Barclay House is in the West End of Leicester, not far from de Montfort University – a popular student and young professional area with lots of shops and restaurants.'
What sort of person are you looking for? 'We work with challenging presentations so flexibility, teamwork and creativity are a must. The role works with a specialist multi-professional team leading development of individual formulations and neuropsychological assessment. They must be able to lead sensitively and support team members to help people reach their full potential. The role is supported by an experienced assistant psychologist. This person may be registered as a neuropsychologist or have had some training in neuropsychology but the ability to work autonomously and a genuine passion for helping these client groups is more important. We will support post doctorate training in neuropsychology for the right person. Regular clinical and professional supervision is provided by an experienced clinical neuropsychologist.'
Is experience important? 'A good candidate will need to understand the dynamics of working in both hospital and care environments and be able to help offer containment and support to those who need it. They must have experience of delivering supervision, running reflective practice groups and understand the importance of a compassion focussed model underpinning services. They must be able to develop and deliver formulation led care and be competent in a range of therapeutic delivery. In addition, we'll encourage and support this person to do research, publish and present it.'
Are there other key tasks. 'Working with the hospital director to evaluate new referrals and discharges and liaison with the CCG and social care. They will also be responsible for professional psychological practice and quality including teaching skills and techniques to others.'
If you had to sum up the role what would you say? 'This is a lovely place to work. We work within a culture of compassion. We are a small unit and you will make a real contribution to our service users and staff development.'
