Dr Jennifer Pulman, CEO of The Talking Therapies Centre in Penwortham Lancashire, sadly and very suddenly died in August 2024.
Jen got her BSc in Applied Psychology and her MSc for Health Psychology at UCLan before acquiring a Doctorate in Health Psychology at Staffordshire University. Jen began her career as a health psychologist in the NHS but after the birth of her son, established a successful private practice. From her innate sense of compassion and ambitious ideas to provide support for mental health, Jen developed a broader vision: she wanted to establish a centre where a group of self-employed therapists from a variety of orientations could work under one roof collaborating, exchanging ideas and supporting one another. Jen offered a free consultation to each client and ensured that clients would get the best fit with an appropriate therapist.
The Talking Therapies Centre (TCC) opened in Penwortham in January 2019 with Jen at its head. Providing services alongside her was a small team of psychotherapists, CBT therapists and counsellors. Whilst working tirelessly to establish the centre and to assist the therapists working in it, Jen continued with her private case load in order to support herself and her son. The TCC was very successful and in 2022 moved to new purpose designed premises with the addition of various therapists, counsellors, psychologists and several students completing placements. Unfortunately, Covid struck, followed closely by the cost-of-living crisis and the scope of the business became too much. Undaunted, Jen and a group of therapists moved with her to Galloways Penwortham where the TCC continued and once again began to thrive.
Jen created and ran TTC in its various forms, whilst supporting and helping to build the practice of many therapists, providing placements for countless students and supporting their progress toward qualifying, all the while continuing to meet clients. Jen's reputation as a private practitioner was second to none and she is sincerely mourned by clients past and present who have spoken of her warmth, her kindness, her understanding and her humour, but most of all, how working with Jen changed their lives. Jen is much missed by her colleagues to whom she gave freely and generously of her time, her support, her knowledge and her expertise.
Personally, Jen was always fun and spontaneous, as well as a joy to her family and friends. She became certified as an Open Water Diver with a PADI qualification (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) during a family holiday to Gran Canaria. In addition, she enjoyed reading, walking in the countryside, swimming, yoga, and meditation. She also liked going to music festivals with her much beloved sister.
Jen will be sorely missed by her clients, her colleagues and all who knew her. Jen was a most loving and supportive daughter, and sister, a devoted mother and a generous and fun-loving friend. Hers is a huge and tragic loss.
