A new report from the Education Policy Institute has revealed that children in England experience big variations in having their special educational needs identified. Responding to the report, Dr Helena Bunn, chair of the Division of Educational and Child Psychology at the British Psychological Society, said:

"The EPI's report confirms what many educational psychologists, and the children and families they work with are seeing first hand every day - there is a postcode lottery for support which needs to be urgently addressed.

"Children who require SEND support must be able to have their needs identified in a timely manner, regardless of their background or the type of school they are attending.

"Teachers should have access to training and individualised support regarding SEND and child development throughout their careers. This would ensure teachers can identify barriers to learning and tailor effective curriculums to best suit a child's specific needs."
