Careers Manager Natalie Billing reviews the student programme at the European Congress of Psychology last week.

12 July 2023

What a week we have had at ECP!

Students attending the event were able to enjoy many different presentations, workshops, symposia and panel discussions about a variety of different psychological topics. Four key sessions developed from the Careers Team were created specifically for students to attend.

The first session explored the difficulties psychology students, university providers, and employers are facing when navigating psychology relevant work experience in the UK and internationally. The Careers Team intend to write up the feedback received, review what was discussed and build upon addressing those issues. We wanted to say a big thank you to Eleanor Duncan, our student committee chair, for facilitating one of these round table discussions.

The second student session explored the Clinical Associate in Psychology role, how it came to fruition, and the intentions for the future of such a successful training programme. We will be asking our speakers to come back and deliver a similar session for our Psychology Careers Festival, so if you are interested in this role, make sure you attend!

We  hosted a Student Ambassador panel discussion, where our very own student ambassadors, Charlotte Ward (Nottingham Trent University), Tahani Baldwin (University of Birmingham), Vlad Makar (University of Leicester) and Monika Pallai (Anglia Ruskin University), shared their experience of their role, what they have achieved, what they enjoy about the role, and some of the challenges that they have faced. It was clear to see what a big change our student ambassadors are making, as well as making positive waves within the student psychological community - we couldn't be prouder!

We were also joined by over 20 student volunteers, including 4 student ambassadors, who offered their time to support us to deliver the congress. Our student volunteers made a massive difference to the congress, supporting the running of the presentations taking part across the conference, helping our delegates to navigate the building, supporting the technicians and speakers with any queries, as well as generally being available to be a helping hand.

We wanted to say a big thank you to our wonderful volunteers, we couldn't have achieved what we have without you and you should be so proud of what you achieved.
