The chair's position did not go out to a vote as both Andrea (pictured right) and Mia (pictured left) were eligible and have opted to co-chair. They are delighted to be taking on the role jointly until 2026.
Andrea has an occupational psychology background and currently works as a lecturer at the University of Salford. She believes in the importance of giving a voice to people, of hearing diverse views, feeling connected with and collaborating with others. She said:
"As a South African having embraced the North West Branch, I believe in the importance of giving people a voice, of fighting for belonging, as opposed to being othered, or not belonging or being considered and heard.
"I want to use my passion, creativity, insight and early career research enthusiasm to collaborate with psychologists from all divisions and backgrounds to instigate change."
Mia works in the field of criminal psychology and leadership, with research interests in early prevention strategies for psychological abuse, psychological violence, and the links between early dysfunctional attachment styles and future victimisation/offending interplay. She currently works as a consultant for security and investigations agencies, assisting them with complex investigations into behavioural risks, profiling, threat assessments and individual and organisational vulnerabilities.
She also stressed the importance of collaboration, as well as championing psychology.
"I am passionate about working collaboratively with our committee members and other member networks to ensure we continually advance and adapt, to align with contemporary psychological development and society needs.
"Championing psychology involves not only internal advocacy but also external engagement. I would strive to encourage committee members and the wider community to strengthen our network's visibility within the public and policy arenas."
