New guidelines promote best practice in psychology recruitment

The BPS has launched three new documents on the use of the consultant psychologist title, working as a national assessor, and using national assessors for appointments.

25 May 2023

These guidelines offer practical recommendations for both employers and psychologists and promote fair and objective assessment of consultants.

They are designed to complement our general guidance on the recruitment of psychologists, which you can access on our website.

The first document, 'Guidance on the use of the title consultant psychologist', provides support to any psychologist using the title 'consultant' to describe themselves and advertise their services to the public.

The further documents are focused on national assessors, with one offering guidance on the role of national assessors themselves, and the second on using national assessors to make consultant psychologist appointments. Both can be accessed on the national assessors section of our website.

We strongly encourage all stakeholders in psychology recruitment to use these guidelines to ensure fair and inclusive recruitment of the best candidates to consultant psychologist posts.
