New Directory of Media Production Psychologists launched

The new directory will make it easier for production companies to find psychologists with appropriate backgrounds, skills and training for media production work.

01 March 2024

Created with the input of a group of expert members who have extensive experience of working with production companies and the media ethics space, the directory will enable members to advertise their skills, experience and professional training on a new, easy to search, directory.

With reality TV continuing to prove hugely popular, and broadcasters seeking new formats, there is a growing demand for the input and expertise of psychologists to work with and support both the creation of shows, and the duty of care production companies have to participants in their shows.

In 2021 Ofcom updated its Broadcast Code to protect members of the public who take part in programmes.

Ofcom specifically references the need for psychologists to assist productions, and it is hoped this new directory will ensure participants in shows get the expert psychological support they need, and psychologists can input in the design and creation of shows where required.

The directory complements our CPD module - Media production psychology: an introduction to working in broadcasting, film and drama - on BPS Learn, which aims to provide learners with the key knowledge and skills required to ensure they are acting in line with relevant guidance regarding duty of care.

Studying this module will help members in understanding what it will mean to make themselves available for production work.

Members can access the CPD course for a reduced price of £60 + VAT.

Professor John Oates, chair of the BPS's Media Ethics Advisory Group, said:

With broadcast productions always seeking new formats, and a perennial audience appetite for 'reality' programmes, the involvement of members of the public in productions is on the increase.

It seems there will always be new format twists and turns that raise novel issues of protecting the wellbeing of participants. It is vital that the psychologists that production companies use have the necessary skills, training and registration to ensure the protection of all participants.
