Responding to the Chief Medical Officer's Health in Cities Annual Report, President of the British Psychological Society Dr Roman Raczka said:

"We agree with the Chief Medical Officer's assessment that mental health service planning and delivery must improve to meet the needs of young people. This is especially the case in cities where deprivation, poverty and health inequalities are proven to be highly concentrated.

"One in five children1 and young people across England has a mental health condition, but last year only a third could access the appropriate treatment. Services must be fit for purpose and able to support communities.

"Long-term and sustainable funding in early intervention schemes, such as Early Support Hubs, could go a long way to increasing the supply of support that so many need. Such services can ensure the psychological, emotional and wellbeing needs of children and young people are met at the earliest opportunity."
