Welcoming the Government's commitment to publish a new Revised Workforce Plan for the NHS in the summer, President of the British Psychological Society Dr Roman Raczka said:
"It is encouraging to see the government recognise the recruitment and retention challenges which face the NHS, with increasing numbers of healthcare staff leaving the sector every year. It is also welcome to see the focus on community-based teams and care, prioritising prevention.
"Many of those that leave are citing burnout, so prioritising the health and wellbeing of those who care for us is more important now than ever before. To create a resilient workforce, the government needs to invest in psychologically-led mental health and wellbeing support services for healthcare professionals. This will go a long way in retaining NHS staff and ensure they can carry out their work effectively and safely.
"You can only have an NHS that is "Fit for the future" if you have a well workforce. We look forward to studying the detail of the government's proposal when they are published."
