NHS England's People Promise Exemplar Programme report has revealed a decrease in the number of staff leaving the health service across key trusts in the country.

Commenting on the findings, President of the British Psychological Society Dr Roman Raczka said:

"It is encouraging to see the number of staff leaving the NHS has decreased in recent years. Staff are the lifeblood of the health service, without them there simply wouldn't be an NHS.

"But although we are seeing a welcome reversal in the numbers, there remains much more work to be done. More than one in four staff absences are due to anxiety, stress and depression, while there remain over 106,000 vacancies in the health service.

"We must protect the mental health and wellbeing of those who care for us when we are most in need, as well as create the most supportive workplace possible for new recruits. After all, you can't have an NHS that is "fit for the future" unless you have a well workforce. Investment in dedicated mental health support for staff is more vital than ever before."
