First British Psychological Society Male Psychology conference to take place on Friday 22 October
The Male Psychology Section of the BPS will host its first annual conference on Friday 22nd October.
05 October 2021
The new field of male psychology became an official part of the BPS in 2018. Male psychology focuses on understanding the behaviour, emotions and thoughts of men and boys.
The conference is online and will explore a variety of key topics from respected speakers in the field, with timely subjects ranging from domestic violence to contemporary narratives about masculinity.
There are two keynote presentations.
The first, by consultant clinical psychologist and first Chair of the Male Psychology Section of the BPS, Martin Seager, who will discuss the causes and possible solutions to some of the main issues in male psychology, such as the high suicide rate, substance abuse, homelessness and crime.
The second keynote is by two psychologists from the US, Dr Denise Hines and Dr Emily Douglas on the subject of the mental health of male victims of domestic violence.
Presentations at the conference will be on topics as diverse as male-friendly therapy, exercise research, workplace stress, teaching male psychology, Black men's experience of therapy, the stress of divorce, improving help-seeking, fatherhood and neurodiversity.
A variety of other topics are represented in the poster session of the conference.
Dr John Barry, current Chair of the Male Psychology Section of the BPS, said:
"It's very exciting to bring a full day of male psychology material to psychologists and the public.
It's a great opportunity to let others know what male psychology is about and how much it can enhance science, policy making, and quality of life in all sorts of ways."
