Faculty of Primary Care
The BPS is pleased to announce that applications are now open for our new Faculty of Primary Care.
27 March 2023
Psychologists have an important and significant role to play in supporting the mental health of patients in contact with primary care services, helping to ensure access to treatment and referral to other services at the earliest opportunity.
Psychologists can also play key roles in the prevention of mental health problems, supporting the psychological well-being of people with physical health problems and in working with the whole primary care team.
We would like to see the role of psychologists within primary care expand for the benefit of both patients and medical professionals.
Our new faculty will provide a network for expertise and research and will further promote the roles of those psychologists working in primary care.
The Faculty of Primary Care will be hosted under the existing structures of the Division of Clinical Psychology, however it is open to all BPS members, in recognition of the multi-disciplinary nature of the work at the heart of primary care.
Full members of any division are able to obtain full membership of the faculty, while associate membership is open to general members of any division and non-division members. Affiliate membership is available for those at in-training or pre-training levels.

Sarb Bajwa, Chief Executive of the BPS said:
"There are some really significant examples of the key role that psychologists can play when embedded within primary care services, benefitting patients directly and other medical professionals across primary care.
I'm pleased that we are able to take this step to providing a home for all psychological professionals with expertise and experience of working within these services and look forward to seeing real progress in this area."
