DCP Statement on the Power, Threat, Meaning Framework

The DCP is concerned about some of the inaccurate claims made about the Framework and its authors on social media and elsewhere.

16 November 2022

The PTMF is a co-produced, optional, evolving set of ideas, based on an extensive range of theory, research and evidence across disciplines.

As we have clearly stated from the start, it is not official policy, and has no specific practical implications or recommendations.

Rather, it is offered as a conceptual resource which people may or may not wish to explore further, or in some cases, translate into practice and evaluate the results.

We are delighted that it has attracted positive responses nationally and internationally. At the same time, we reiterate that staff and service users are entirely free to disagree with it in part or in whole.

Debate, feedback and critique is welcomed by the authors and by the DCP, although their ability to respond directly is limited.

Please see this article for the authors' replies to common questions and criticisms.

The DCP is concerned about some of the inaccurate claims made about the Framework and its authors on social media and elsewhere.

Personal attacks and alarmist misrepresentations, of which there have been quite a few, are unhelpful and unnecessary.

General concerns and questions should be directed to the DCP or BPS, not to the authors themselves.

Please see the FAQs for further clarification.
