The British Psychological Society's Truro Hub, led by Stella Woods, hosted a thought-provoking meeting on the topic of 'Compassion in an Uncompassionate World' at the Vertigo Wine Bar in Truro. Led by Sophie Mayhew, a clinical psychologist, the event aimed to delve into the importance of compassion, particularly in the context of workplace burnout.
Sophie discussed and defined the meaning of compassion and the use of compassion-focused therapy. Despite the challenges of advertising, six attendees gathered to explore this crucial topic. Sophie Mayhew illustrated and explained how the fight-or-flight model can be utilised to understand burnout in individuals. By providing insights into the psychological mechanisms at play, attendees gained a deeper understanding of the impact of stress and pressure in the workplace.

A key takeaway from the discussion was the importance of fostering respect and understanding within industry and corporate organisations towards their employees' mental wellbeing. In a world where compassion can sometimes feel scarce, acknowledging and addressing the factors contributing to burnout is essential for creating a supportive and healthy work environment.
Thank you to Stella Woods, Sophie Mayhew, and all attendees for a meaningful and insightful evening.
