Welcoming the Education Secretary's plans for a 'new era' of school standards, Dr Helena Bunn, chair of the Division of Educational and Child Psychology at the British Psychological Society, said:

"We welcome the Government's aspirations to improve educational standards in the UK. Such plans are urgently needed for those with additional learning needs. Evidence has shown time and again there has been no consistent improvement in outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities since 2019.

"Investment in growing the psychological workforce is critical in guiding how best to support every learner in education and should complement any future initiatives. Educational Psychologists must be allowed to work proactively with the regional improvement for standards and excellence teams (RISE), to help level the playing field for all children and achieve equitable outcomes. We will be responding to the consultation in due course and encouraging our members to do so as well."
