Welcoming the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, Chair of the BPS's Faculty for Children Young People and their Families Dr Rachel Bradley said:
"We welcome the government's Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill which is a positive step towards putting children and young people at the centre of policy-making.
"It is concerning to see the increasing numbers of children and young people needing to access mental health services and we know many of these young people also have family members who are struggling. It is absolutely vital we put an end to families falling between the gaps in services to help prevent them reaching crisis point. It is positive therefore to see there is a focus on improving support for children who are not in school or are being educated at home, and for kinship carers, who may often not have access to the services they need.
"These plans should go hand in hand with lifting as many families out of poverty as possible. It is especially encouraging to see prominent initiatives that help struggling families, such as having equal access to breakfast clubs. We look forward to working with the government to help level the playing field for all children and young people."
