Supporting the launch of the Future Minds campaign backed by Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition, which the British Psychological Society is part of, Julia Faulconbridge, from the BPS's Division of Clinical Psychology said:
"Increased mental health service provision for children and young people is desperately needed, which is why we are proud to support the Future Minds campaign.
"One in five children and young people has a mental health difficulty, with two thirds being unable to access treatment last year in England. It is imperative there is investment in early intervention services to prevent issues from becoming entrenched from the outset. In addition to growing the mental health workforce and the services available, there needs to be a real focus on prevention. We know already many of the risk factors for the development of difficulties and a holistic society-wide approach is needed to address these factors at a social, economic and educational level."
Chair of the BPS's Faculty for Children Young People and their Families Dr Rachel Bradley added:
"More and more children and young people are needing to access mental health services. Many of these young people also have family members who are struggling. It is vital we put an end to families falling between the gaps in services and stop them from reaching crisis point."
