BPS response to Illegal Migration Bill

The BPS is deeply concerned about the psychological and human rights impact of the government’s proposals.

13 March 2023

The British Psychological Society is deeply concerned about the psychological and human rights impact of the government's Illegal Migration Bill on those seeking asylum in the UK.

People seeking asylum may face many challenges during their perilous journeys to the UK, including multiple losses, human trafficking, sexual violence and separation from their families. These experiences can result in significant trauma.

It is crucial that people seeking asylum are treated humanely and that their human rights are upheld in accordance with international human rights law.

Promoting empathy and compassion when discussing these issues is vital, and we urge policymakers to prioritise the wellbeing and human rights of those seeking asylum.

The new BPS Human Rights Advisory Group will review the Bill in detail and seek to work with other key organisations with expertise in this area.

The group will also be updating the BPS guidelines for psychologists working with refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.
