Responding to the Health Services Safety Investigations Body's report into mental health out of area placements, President of the British Psychological Society Dr Roman Raczka said:
"This latest report from the Health Services Safety Investigations Body highlights that far too many people are struggling to access the quality care they need in a timely manner.
"With over two million people on waiting lists for NHS mental health support in England alone, patients deserve high quality care in safe and compassionate environments when they are finally able to access the support they require.
"The increasing number of patients waiting for treatment is caused by a long-term lack of investment in services, often resulting in a postcode lottery. The government must use this as a chance to properly fund mental health services. Growing the mental health workforce, alongside embedding a greater focus on prevention, should be a top priority and will ensure patients get the expert support they need without long delays."
