Responding to the news that police officers in Scotland have taken over 440,000 days off sick due to poor mental health since 2019, Associate Professor Dr Adam Mahoney from the Division of Forensic Psychology Scotland at the British Psychological Society said:
"These latest figures present a stark warning for the future of policing in Scotland if urgent investment in their mental health isn't forthcoming. Police officers are exposed to potentially distressing and traumatising situations on a regular basis. We must do all we can to protect those who serve the public on the frontline with readily available psychological support.
"Forensic psychologists regularly provide critical incident support, debriefing and other therapeutic input across a range of services in the justice sector. However, these figures highlight a need for greater investment in the mental health, wellbeing and support provided to serving police officers undertaking a crucial role in protecting the public."
