BPS responds to government spending plans for mental health services

"This funding allocation doesn’t go far enough to improve mental health services in the country or to tackle growing waiting lists." says BPS

Responding to the government's announcement on future mental health spending, President of British Psychological Society Dr Roman Raczka said:

"It is encouraging to see that the forecast for real terms spending on mental health is set to increase in the coming years.  The current size of the mental health workforce cannot keep up with increasing demand. A renewed focus on early intervention and prevention services is needed now more than ever. These areas must be prioritised when the increase in funding arrives.

"In the immediate term however, it is clear that investment for mental health services has slightly decreased year on year. This funding allocation doesn't go far enough to improve mental health services in the country or to tackle growing waiting lists. Over two million people are waiting for mental health support in England alone.

"We would urge the government to re-examine this decision and commit increased spending to the frontline as quickly as possible and where it is urgently required."
