The BPS has today responded to a written statement from Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan, which confirmed the bill would be published shortly and would "protect everyone, including those targeted on the basis of their sexuality, or being transgender".

Dr Adam Jowett, chair of the BPS's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Board, said:

"We strongly welcome the government's commitment to a draft Bill that will set out a proposed approach to ban conversion practices in England and Wales. It is right that the Bill will protect people of all gender and sexual minorities, including transgender people.

"However, it remains vitally important that a ban is implemented as soon possible, to protect people from the unethical therapies that purport to change or 'convert' sexual orientation or gender identity. While the government legislates, people will continue to be subjected to damaging and abusive practices that ruins lives.

"Alongside our partners, we've long campaigned for a ban on conversion therapy, and after a lengthy and difficult journey, we are pleased to see this issue finally reaching the point of legislation. Our work doesn't stop here. We will continue to work with the government and partners to make sure the Bill is fit for purpose."
