The General Medical Council's latest annual report into the workplace experiences of doctors in the UK shows that doctors are increasingly taking steps themselves to address workload and capacity pressures.

Responding to the report Dr Roman Raczka, President of the British Psychological Society said:

"These latest figures from the General Medical Council, highlight the bleak reality of the growing pressures and a lack of wellbeing support, currently facing the NHS workforce.

"The NHS can only thrive, and patients can only access the services and care they need, if we have a 'well' workforce. The GMC's findings provide a timely reminder that the government must act now to create a healthier NHS for staff and their patients.

"NHS staff are becoming increasingly stressed, burnt out and demoralised. They also face a postcode lottery for high quality psychological support following the closure of many NHS Staff Mental Health and Wellbeing Hubs. It is imperative that the NHS England review of staff mental health services proceeds as a matter of priority.

"Creating an NHS that is 'fit for the future' requires staff wellbeing at its core. We reiterate our commitment to working with the government and the NHS to bring this to fruition."
