Following the publication of the Public Accounts Committee's report into NHS waiting lists and backlog Sarb Bajwa, CEO of the BPS, said:
"There is no doubt that the NHS faces the biggest challenge in its history as it looks to clear the backlog created by the pandemic, but we are disappointed there is not more direct focus on mental health services in the report.
Parity of esteem between physical and mental health is vital to ensure people can access the support and services they need, from a properly funded and well-resourced workforce. Not until we reach that point will outcomes for people with mental health difficulties begin to improve.
"Staff are currently working flat out to do the best for their patients, but the chronic staff shortages and lack of investment is making it a near-impossible task.
The report highlights the longstanding workforce issues in the health service, and we reiterate our calls for the government to urgently invest in the mental health workforce to ensure that the necessary staff are in place to deliver the services people need.
The government also needs to prioritise NHS staff-wellbeing, with a proper strategy in place to deliver long-term support, prevent burnout and retain and recruit staff."
