Responding to the government's new Get Britain Working White Paper aimed at getting millions of people back into work, the President of the British Psychological Society Dr Roman Raczka said:

"We welcome the government's aspirations to help people with a mental health condition back into work, particularly more funding for mental health services. However, any new plans or changes to benefits must be carried out as sensitively as possible.

"While we await the detail of the proposals, it's important to reiterate that sanctions that threaten to remove a person's welfare benefits are proven to be ineffective and can be hugely detrimental to a person's mental health. It's also vital to create psychologically safe workplaces that support someone's ability to work, ultimately benefiting their overall well-being."

"The BPS is committed to working with the government to get the very best outcomes for those with mental health challenges."
