The REF panel for Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience assessed 80 per cent of submitted activity as being either 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent', which is deserved recognition for the excellent research being done by psychologists across the four nations of the UK.

We are particularly pleased about the increased recognition of UK psychological research's impact, with more than 85 per cent being rated as either 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'. This confirms that, not only is our research of a high standard, it also makes an outstanding contribution to wider society.

The results also show the important contribution of early career researchers, who made up nearly 20 per cent of submitted staff, and had a comparable profile to more established staff.

Professor Andy Tolmie, chair of the BPS's Research Board said:

"We are keen to see psychology in the UK build on these impressive results, including in areas not specifically assessed by the psychology panel in REF2021, and to continue its commitment to open science."
