BPS partners with Health Service Journal on webinar exploring vital need for staff mental health provision

The webinar is available to watch on demand.

18 December 2023

We teamed up with Health Service Journal to deliver a webinar 'Providing mental health support to NHS staff', as part of our ongoing campaign to protect the future of mental health provision.

Dr Roman Raczka, BPS president-elect was joined on the webinar panel by Saffron Cordery, deputy chief executive of NHS Providers; Dr Jo Jordan, chartered consultant clinical psychologist and clinical lead at Humber and North Yorkshire Resilience Hub; and Dr Kevin Teoh, chartered psychologist and senior lecturer in organisational psychology at Birkbeck, University of London.

The thought-provoking and insightful discussion covered key areas, including:

  • the impact of the pandemic and other pressures on the mental health of the NHS workforce
  • why a systemic approach to staff mental health and wellbeing provision is key, and the evidence for effective provision
  • frontline insight into the increase in demand for existing services and severity of need
  • how effective staff mental health and wellbeing provision supports a reduction in sickness absence and supports staff retention
  • why long term ring-fenced investment in staff mental health and wellbeing provision is vital.

Dr Roman Raczka, BPS president-elect, said:

"The deeply worrying insight shared in this webinar paints a stark picture of what's happening for staff on the ground. Demand for mental health support is increasing, and staff are presenting with more severe mental health needs. We need to support NHS and social care staff to thrive in their roles, not just survive.

"This important discussion sets out exactly why long term investment in staff mental health and wellbeing support is needed, now more than ever."

The webinar is now available to watch on-demand.
