BPS Journals shine with latest impact factors
On 28 June, Clarivate released the 2023 Journal Citation Report, containing the 2022 journal impact factors. This year, for the first time, impact factors have one decimal place.

The Journal Citation Report (JCR) evaluates citations to thousands of journals accepted, under a selective process, for coverage in Clarivate's Web of Science. The JCR provides impact factors and rankings, helping to understand a journal's influence on the global research community.
The journal impact factor is defined as all citations to the journal in the current JCR year to items published in the previous two years, divided by the total number of scholarly items (these comprise articles, reviews, and proceedings papers) published in the journal in the previous two years.
The Impact Factor is one of many metrics that show the collective impact of our journals' published research, and we wish to thank our authors, reviewers, editorial boards, and editors-in-chief for their outstanding work in contributing to consistently strong output.
More information on the range of metrics available to journals can be found online.
In 2021, Clarivate changed the way it counts citations to content by including citations to articles published online ahead of being assigned to an issue (known as 'EarlyView' for the BPS journal portfolio). This led to a temporary boost to citations over the two year impact factor window where EarlyView content featured in the numerator (number of cites) but not denominator (citable items), in turn increasing 2020 and 2021 Impact Factors.
The citation behaviour is now normalised with the 2022 Impact Factor due to EarlyView content being included in both numerator (number of cites) and denominator (citable items). More information with worked examples can be found online.
