Welcoming the Humanity needs Psychology statement, David Murphy, vice-president of the BPS, said:
"I have always felt that it is crucial that BPS is an active member of the global psychological community and during the Covid-19 pandemic the value of international collaboration has really been highlighted.
"Sharing learning, strategies and resources with international colleagues during the crisis has highlighted the impact of our discipline and helped national policymakers round the world to better appreciate the potential contribution psychologists and psychology can make."
Building an international voice has such relevance in today's world. Hazel McLaughlin, president of the BPS, commented:
"As psychologists we are united by the unique and valuable role our science plays in understanding and supporting humankind. The important work undertaken by our profession during the Covid-19 crisis is a great example of this.
This is only the beginning and the BPS is committed to international collaboration. There is significant opportunity to contribute to the global community of psychologists, to build alliances and a shared vision for the profession.
Together as a global community, we can address issues that we could not before, and with technology we can communicate efficiently to share ideas and build initiatives in new and exciting ways.
Promoting equality, the approach enables societies around the world to share knowledge and add value to one another's work in a way that hasn't been possible in the past.
We look forward to future collaborations not only throughout the Covid-19 pandemic but beyond."
