This publication is intended to complement the formal training process in sport and exercise psychology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and also as part of continued professional development for newly-qualified and/or chartered sport and exercise psychologists. Effective counselling skills are central to promoting constructive psychological change. This publication directly addresses the area of counselling skills to enhance applied consulting by offering a robust framework that has been developed through the sport psychology consulting experience of the authors. The practical exercises it contains also aim to improve the quality of applied sport psychology support by developing the formal communication skills between the practitioner and athlete.
