An exploration of children, adolescent and young peoples’ attitudes towards the transgender population

This thesis explores children, adolescent and young peoples' (CYP) attitudes towards the transgender population.

The first paper reviews the literature that explores the different factors that influence attitudes towards the transgender population.

Three key themes that influenced attitudes towards the transgender population were present within the literature:

• Heteronormativity
• Conservatism
• Gender Differences

These themes highlight the relationship between a sense of belonging, group membership and the subsequent negative attitudes towards the transgender population.

Implications for future research and educational practice are discussed with a specific focus on equality and improvement within educational settings.

The second paper explores adolescent understanding of, and attitudes towards, traditional gender role beliefs, gender stereotypes and the transgender population.

Using semi-structured interviews, I sought to gather the perceptions of ten pupils aged 13-14 (9 females, 1 male) from a secondary school in the South of England.

I analysed the data using Thematic Analysis and five core themes were identified:

• Systemic influences on attitudes
• Gender roles
• Understanding the transgender population
• Observable difference
• Awareness and education

Implications for future research and educational practice are discussed.
