Update on Functional Cognitive Disorders
- Cognition and perception
About
Functional Neurological Disorders continue to rise up the agenda both clinically and in the research literature.
Increased recognition, diagnosis and research are heralds of hope, and we see an increasing need for services, presenting Clinical Neuropsychologists with both a clinical and service development challenge.
Up-to-date clinical evidence and knowledge is one key to meeting that service development challenge.
Functional Cognitive Disorders, long a staple of Neuropsychological practice, are also now the subject of renewed interest and debate in the literature, and Covid-19 presents new challenges which are yet to become fully clear.
In this study day we collect a series of presentation to address these areas.
Further information
This day is dedicated to the memory of Jason Price, who was well known to many of us through his work in many arenas; in FND, in Stroke and for his policy work for the DoN.
In particular he was one of the leading Clinical Neuropsychologists working to raise the profile of FND and for better services for people with FND.
He was one of the organisers of this study day and would originally have been speaking. So it is with both sadness and gratitude that we will take this opportunity to mark his many contributions and to dedicate this day to his memory.

Speakers
Niels Detert
Niels Detert is a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford with a long-standing special interest in FND. He has worked in particular with Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for the treatment of Functional Seizures. More recently he has been chairing a workstream of the Division of Neuropsychology policy unit developing a position statement on the role of clinical neuropsychology in FND. He is the chair of an FND liaison group of representatives of UK professional and voluntary sector bodies and stakeholders, the UKFND Network.
Mark Edwards
Mark Edwards (MBBS, BSc (Hons), PhD, FRCP) is Professor of Neurology and Interface Disorders at Kings College London and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at The Maudsley and Kings College Hospitals.
He has a specialist clinical and research interest in Movement Disorders and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). He did his PhD with Professor John Rothwell and Professor Kailash Bhatia at the UCL Institute of Neurology, studying the pathophysiology of genetic dystonia. During this period he was involved with the development of a novel and now widely used technique for transcranial magnetic stimulation: theta burst stimulation. Following completion of neurology training he became a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at UCL and the National Hospital for Neurology. Here he developed an NIHR funded research program and specialist diagnostic and treatment service for patients with FND. After moving to St George's in 2015 he expanded this work to develop one of the first integrated diagnostic and treatment services for FND alongside continued research work into the pathophysiology of the disorder and development and testing of novel treatments, including the first randomised trial of specialist physiotherapy for functional movement disorders. He also helped to establish a new specialist movement disorders and deep brain stimulation team at the Atkinson Morley Regional Neuroscience Centre. He recently led the development of a national exemplar pathway for Functional Neurological Disorder for the National Neurology Advisory Group on behalf of NHS England. He was recently appointed as Professor of Neurology and Interface Disorders at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London and Consultant Neurologist at the Maudsley and King's College Hospital from September 2022.
He has published over 300 peer reviewed publications and is author of the Oxford Specialist Handbook of Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders. He is President of the Association of British Neurology Movement Disorders Group, International Executive Committee member of the International Parkinson's and Movement Disorders Society, Board and Founding Member of the Functional Neurological Disorder Society, Associate Editor of the European Journal of Neurology, and medical advisor for FNDHope, the UK Dystonia Society and the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine. He is the winner of the Jon Stolk Award for Movement Disorders research from the American Academy of Neurology, the David Marsden Award for Dystonia research, the Queen Square Prize and the Uschi Tschabitscher prize for research from the European Academy of Neurology.
Laura Goldstein
Laura H. Goldstein is Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology in the Psychology Department at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IOPPN) and Honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the Maudsley Hospital, South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, where she provides a clinical neuropsychology service to the Neuropsychiatry department. She is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and has undertaken internationally recognised research into the neuropsychological and broader psychological consequences of neurological disorders (especially motor neuron disease and epilepsy) and their comorbidities. She has been involved in evaluating psychoeducational and psychological interventions for people with epilepsy and has led an NIHR HTA-funded randomised controlled trial of cognitive behavioural therapy for patients with dissociative (non-epileptic) seizures (the CODES Trial), with the main outcome paper published in Lancet Psychiatry in 2020. She is currently also involved in NIHR HTA-funded trials studying the use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for people with motor neuron disease and the use of specialist physiotherapy for adults with functional movement disorder. Previously, she played a major role in the post-qualification training of UK clinical neuropsychologists through leading PG Diploma courses at the Institute of Psychiatry over a 16-year period. She has contributed to the organisation and delivery of neuropsychology teaching to the IOPPN's D Clin Psy course over many years. Together with Jane McNeil she co-edited two editions of "Clinical Neuropsychology. A Practical Guide to Assessment and Management for Clinicians" as well "The Clinical Psychologist's Handbook of Epilepsy: Assessment and Management" which she co-edited with Christine Cull.
Leo Russell
Dr Leo Russell is a Clinical Psychologist and Professional Lead for the Exeter Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Psychology Service at Devon Partnership NHS Trust where he also chairs the MDT for their wider multi-disciplinary pathway. He is a member of the medical expert committee for 'FND Hope' and an Ambassador for the south-west charity 'FND Friends'. His research explores FND service development and the application of psychological treatment to functional symptoms. He has a special interest in Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) publishing on its clinical efficacy, health economics data and application to FND. He is the Director of ISTDP Health which provides ISTDP training designed for clinicians working in NHS settings.
