Cate will talk about how film and media have represented people who participate in BDSM, and how this has impacted the laws we have today.

Not only do the assumptions society make result in the othering of people who are seen as deviant,  this has had consequences for how people are treated in therapy sessions, and in court cases, despite the reality of the practice being misunderstood.

Understanding the experiences of populations from their own perspective has been highlighted as crucial within film and cinema, yet those practicing BDSM are still shunned, only represented through the "Vanilla Gaze".

Often, BDSM practices translate into the everyday lives of participants, and this has a multitude of benefits which could be used to improve psychological practices.
