About

Are you a Psychologist who works at or with an inpatient CAMHS unit? If so, join us for an empowering and informative virtual conference on Trauma Informed Care!

As we know, Trauma can have a devastating impact on the mental health of children and adolescents, leaving them feeling scared, anxious, and alone. Therefore, Trauma Informed Care is a critical component of providing quality mental health care on an inpatient CAMHS unit.

This approach aims to
provide a holistic technique to care, allowing for the recognition, treatment, and prevention of traumatising experiences; whilst also considering the strengths and resilience of each individual.

Trauma informed Care seeks to create a safe and nurturing environment in order to build trust with the young people, in turn this can lead to the young people actively engaging in their treatment and taking ownership of their recovery.

Through the provision of empathy, compassion, understanding and safety, Trauma Informed Care helps to provide the foundation for children and adolescents to begin to heal and to move towards positive and lasting change.

As a Psychologist in an inpatient CAMHS setting, you play a crucial role in supporting some of the most vulnerable children and adolescents affected by trauma. That's why we need to be equipped with the latest approaches to help our service users to navigate these difficult times.

There are also many lessons from this approach that are relevant to us as professionals working in inpatient CAMHS in to improve staff engagement, satisfaction, and wellbeing.

This conference aims to provide you with the latest research and strategies for addressing trauma through powerful speeches, presentations, and thought-provoking panel discussions; equipping you with the tools and knowledge you need from leading experts in the field of Trauma Informed Care.

At the 12th FICAPS conference our aim is to inspire you to continue making a difference in the lives of those affected by trauma and to help you build a supportive network of colleagues who share your passion for trauma-informed care. Together we can make a difference!

Leanne Hunt

I am a Clinical Psychologist currently working in a Psychology Service within Community Paediatrics in Suffolk. I have worked in the NHS for 11 years and have spent the majority of my career so far with children and their families. This has included 2.5 years working in a CAMHS inpatient unit and 1.5 years in a community CAMHS team prior to starting my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2016. Clinically I lean towards attachment and play-based therapies, and I have a particular interest both clinically and academically in staff well-being.

Emma Williams

Dr Emma Williams is a Clinical Psychologist based in Manchester. She has worked in inpatient and forensic services since qualifying in 2013. She currently works into Junction 17 (Adolescent Acute) and Gardener Unit (MSU) and is the co-ordinator for staff debriefs following serious incidents across GMMH.

Liz Rushbrooke

Liz Rushbrooke is a clinical psychologist working in the NHS. She has 11 years of CAMHS experience and has worked in a children's inpatient unit in the North West of England for the past 5 years. Liz is interested in how to negotiate the massive, but worthwhile, challenge of being a truly 'trauma-informed' service.

Tirma Morera

Dr Tirma Morera is the lead Clinical Psychologist for Brookside Inpatients and YPHT who has specialised in inpatient work for the majority of her NHS career, pre and post doctoral qualification. Prior to this role she specialised in working with high risk and complex presentations within inpatients and community settings with DBT as her core therapeutic orientation. Other areas of interest are anti-racist practice, which is the main topic for the presentation today.

Anthony Bloemandaal

CRITIC Study: Workplace Trauma and Violence Exposure

Workplace trauma exposure in the psychiatric health care setting may have a major impact on caregivers´ Professional Quality of Life. The consequences can be severe and impact many life areas including worker performance. The CRITIC Study aims to improve the understanding of the interaction between personal life history (childhood adversity and benevolence), exposure to trauma and violence at work and professional quality of life.

The CRITIC Study will provide insight into the complex relationship between personal life history and professional quality of life. The results can be used for designing interventions to increase resilience to trauma and to improve professional quality of life among health care professionals.

In this keynote, the effects of exposure to trauma and neglect in early life and at work will be elaborated on and we will discuss the potential implications from a personal and organisational point of view.

Dr Leanne Hunt

Inpatient CAMHS staff experiences and subjective well-being.

I will be presenting my doctoral research which is a qualitative exploration of inpatient CAMHS staff well-being and their experiences of working in the inpatient units. There will be an opportunity to discuss the findings and recommendations.

Dr Tirma Morera

Understanding and Responding to Racism Within an Inpatient Setting - The Multidimensional Valueof Applied Psychology and trauma informed practice: Case study, Review, and Recommendations

This presentation will focus on my own experiences of the devastating impact of racial trauma in my service, how I made sense of this from a trauma-informed perspective, and how I intervened using skills that we all share here today as Applied Psychologists. I will take you on a brief journey about what this involved, the personal and professional impact on me, how I moved from what felt like a helpless/hopeless position, to a more empowered and enabling one in my review of this experience. The final part of the presentation will focus on my learning and recommendations, and the take home message of hope, inspiration, and The multidimensional value of applied psychology and racial trauma informed practice in MDT settings.

Katie Taunt and Dr Nicola Green

Implementing Trauma Informed Care in a CAMHS inpatient setting using the ARC framework: Trials and Tribulations.

The session will describe the development of the clinical model for the Inspire CAMHS adolescent inpatient service in Hull, including an overview of the overarching conceptual framework (ARC), philosophy of care and treatment ethos of the unit.

The overarching treatment approach is informed by the Attachment Self Regulatory Competency (ARC) Approach (Kinniburgh and Blaustein, 2005) which provides a framework to guide and inform treatment choices while recognizing the need for individually tailored intervention. It is a flexible model of intervention that's embedded in a developmental and social context.

ARC is a trauma informed model of care underpinned by trauma theory and research and evolved within the context of the Boston Trauma Center building on the work of Bessel van der Kolk and the growing understanding of developmental trauma. Adolescents with complex mental health difficulties often have had to focus on survival and have not had the capacity and/or support to develop the competency to copeWhat makes ARC different to some other frameworks is it's focus on the importance of addressing the whole system around a young person and the need for carers to first be able to regulate their own affect.

The presentation will describe how this approach has been incorporated in to the clinical model as a move away from the more traditional diagnostic medical model and the associated challenges this brings when working in a CAMHS inpatient context.

Dr Emma Williams

Sexual Safety: our role in inpatient CAMHS

This talk will explore the notion of Sexual Safety, its relevance for trauma informed care and the uniqueness of our CAMHS units in relation to the concept. I will summarise findings from a service related project looking at an analysis of risk incidents and areas for development, before outlining a proposed strategy for increasing sexual safety and reducing risk across the inpatient CAMHS environment.
