Transpersonal Psychology Section Annual Conference 2023
- Spirituality and religion
About
The theme of this year's conference is: Returning to our roots.
Transpersonal Psychology's origins are typically traced back to either the pioneering work of William James, the Analytical Psychology of Carl Jung, or the Transpersonal focus of Abraham Maslow's later work, but in this conference, we also wish to recognise and celebrate the role of the various Wisdom and Indigenous Traditions that have consistently shaped and inspired our discipline, and continue to do so.
Over three days, in the spacious surroundings of Cober Hill in Scarborough, we will seek to explore and re-evaluate the profound influence of Eastern Spiritual Traditions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism), Mystical Traditions (Kabbalistic, Sufi and Christian Contemplative) and Shamanistic traditions on Transpersonal Psychology, through engaging speakers, academic papers, and practical workshops - including meditation, visualisation, qigong, martial arts and yoga.
We will also seek to balance our scholarly pursuits with an equal emphasis on the social, communal and community-building elements of Transpersonal Psychology, through more informal gatherings, and a memorable night's entertainment consisting of poetry, music and magic.
The learning outcomes are:
- To explore current themes of focus within Transpersonal Psychology - specifically a return to the experiential and contemplative modes of inquiry, coupled with a revitalised analysis of the influence of wisdom and indigenous traditions
- To provide an engaging and comprehensive overview of the current state of research in Transpersonal Psychology – inviting dialogue and increased interdisciplinary contributions

Michael Daniels PhD - Roots and branches of transpersonal psychology
This paper explores the historical roots of transpersonal psychology and the ways in which these have affected the development and status of the discipline. I trace the roots of transpersonal psychology within spiritual traditions, philosophy, psychology, psychical research, and socio-political movements and show how this has resulted in a rich diversity of voices, schools, and approaches. I argue that transpersonal psychology has many intertwining branches that are connected only by a common quest to understand humanity's spiritual impulse.
Les Lancaster PhD - Eighteen steps that changed the world: Kabbalah and the unconscious
Influences on the history of transpersonal psychology from religious and mystical traditions have been many and varied. Daoism, Vedanta and Buddhism, for example, have impacted notions of self and transformative practice. In this lecture I will explore the specific role that Kabbalah and Rabbinic thought have played in the development of transpersonal psychology's notion of the unconscious. Historically, the dynamic between Christianity and Judaism has been such that Jews and their religion took on the role of shadow to the dominant religion. In this context, the Kabbalah became a mysticism of the unconscious. Some of the significant evolutionary jumps in the western cultural milieu made by the dominant Christian culture in Europe occurred when it paid creative attention to its shadow, as instantiated by Jews, their religion and especially their mysticism. I argue that there is a pattern to these processes in the collective psyche that parallel those Jung discerned in the personal individuation process: The first step entails turning to the shadow. I explore the fate of this inter-religious dynamic in recent times, and the role of mysticism in post-institutional religion.
And … the 18 steps? Well … all will be revealed … you'll just have to be present!
