Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) for people with a personality disorder - an evidence-based approach
- Mental health
- Personality and self
Personality disorders are highly prevalent in mental health services and non-specialists find them difficult to assess. Working with this group can be challenging for professionals due to behaviour such as cutting, drug-use, alcohol, suicidality and anger. Recent years have seen a number of evidence-based psychotherapies. Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is one of what has been termed the "big four" psychotherapies, alongside DBT, MBT and Schema Therapy. Meta studies have found that these therapies are effective. Clinical experience shows that some patients respond well to one therapy and not another, and there is a strong case for offering a range of therapies. TFP is growing internationally and is relatively new to the UK with a small but growing number of practitioners. The presenter is a founding member of the TFP-UK group. He is head of the Lewisham Personality Disorder Service, South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM)
