Supervision, Leadership and where they meet
- Trainees and training
About
DCP England committee is excited to host the first CPD event primarily aimed at pre-qualification members, however those at stages of training and qualification are welcome to join. We invite attendees from all nations to think about their roles, leadership and supervisory aspects, where these meet, and how they interact at different career stages. The event aims to support pre-qualification members to utilise leadership and supervision skills to enhance their practice and development; and consider their contribution to shaping the next generation of clinical psychologists.

Speakers
Amanda Griffiths
Co-Founder of Yor-Peer Support, grassroots trauma informed peer support group in North Yorkshire UK.
I am a trauma survivor & activist campaigning for non-medicalised alternatives to the traditional ways of thinking about human distress after experiencing years of iatrogenic harm and oppressive systemic abuse which obscured the root cause of my suffering. Dissatisfied with the harmfully pathologising explanation for my distress, 7 years ago, my formidable GP and I challenged the deeply insulting personality disorder label. The transformational outcome of an independent psychological assessment that finally recognised the lasting impact of a lifetime of trauma was the pivotal moment of establishing my journey towards freedom from the mental health system and survivorship.
Benefiting from a non-pathologising, humane approach to my own suffering I now advocate for everyone's right to think individually about their experiences considering any ideas, theories, and frameworks they find helpful.
I also draw on these experiences to inform my work as a lived expert member of the British Psychological Society Division of Clinical Psychology PTMF committee, contributing to the ongoing development the framework. I am currently involved in a project adapting the framework to deliver workshops to others experiencing distress and provide lived expert led PTMF training to individuals and organisations both nationally and internationally.

Annette Schlosser
Academic Coordinator and Clinical Psychologist
Co-chair of the Group of Trainers in Clinical Psychology. Former Chair of the Humber and Yorkshire DCP branch.
I have been a clinical psychology trainer in the UK since 2007, and have worked in the NHS since 1997. At Hull I work with trainees to develop their skills and confidence in working with people in different settings and across the age and ability range. I coordinate the curriculum for the University of Hull Clin Psy D, I am an internal and external examiner for Clin Psy D theses, and I have supported many trainees as personal tutor over the years. I value curiosity and like playing with ideas. In the NHS I have worked with adults, children under 5, school aged children and teenagers, parents and grandparents, professionals in NHS, social care, and wider settings.
This talk will address trainee experiences and exposure to leadership and supervision. Prequal and aspiring clinical psychologists are often anxious or unsure about what leadership is, and how they can embody this. Is leadership something we do, something other people think we do, or something that is expected of us? What makes us anxious to jump into taking a lead role, what helps us to take on lead roles, and how can we use supervision to develop our leadership skills? This talk will address barriers and facilitators to leadership activity in pre-qual roles, in a hierarchical NHS system. The focus will be on developing confidence, and using both core skills and unique attributes to build leadership awareness and ability.
