Social Psychology Section Annual Conference 2024
- Social and behavioural
About
The Social Psychology Section Annual Conference is set to take place from September 2 to 4, 2024, at Queen's University of Belfast.
The central theme for this year's conference is "Utilizing Social Psychology to Address Conflicts, Societal Divisions and Cohesion."
In today's world, societies grapple with challenges like conflict, polarization, inequality, and divisions, which hinder social cohesion. A divided society is already fragmented along ethnic, religious, sectarian, political, or cultural lines. What sets divided societies apart is their inability to reach a consensus on decision-making processes and to establish a common identity.
For our 2024 conference, our primary goal is to deeply explore the extensive landscape of research, innovation, development, and impact within our discipline, specifically focusing on resolving social issues related to conflicts and societal divisions. We intend to acknowledge and celebrate the critical work that has already been accomplished in this area while shedding light on the most pressing areas in need of immediate attention.
We warmly welcome submissions for symposia, individual blitz talks, and posters from all corners of the social psychology domain. Our aim is to represent the entire spectrum of topics and methodologies that fall within the realm of social psychology. In the case of symposia submissions, we strongly encourage collaborations among presenters from various institutions and career stages.
Through our 2024 conference, we aspire not only to exhibit the highest-quality social psychological research but also to create an environment where social psychologists at every stage of their careers can actively participate in engaging discussions, establish networks, and explore opportunities for fresh collaborations, both within and outside their field.
We eagerly anticipate your participation in September! Please take note that submission registration will close on May 15, 2024.

Speakers
Dr Laura K. Taylor
Laura K. Taylor (PhD) is an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at University College Dublin. She integrates developmental and social psychology with peace studies to examine positive development and social inclusion among children and youth in conflict-affected settings, such as Colombia, Croatia, Kosovo, Israel, Republic of North Macedonia, and Northern Ireland. She uses the Developmental Peacebuilding Model (Taylor, 2020) to study how multiple factors (e.g., family, school, nation) influence child development.
Laura also focuses on children’s and youth’s agency, more specifically, how outgroup prosociality toward conflict rivals may be contribute to peacebuilding. Laura’s current research is funded by the EU H2020, Irish Research Council, Enterprise Ireland, John F. Templeton Foundation. She has over 100 peer-reviewed articles, almost half of which have student co-authors. Laura is a Consulting Editor for Child Development and the Journal of Research on Adolescence, and the Editor of the APA journal Peace and Conflict: Journal of Peace Psychology.
Stefania Paolini
Stefania Paolini is Professor of Social and Intercultural Psychology at Durham University, UK. She completed her PhD at Cardiff University and held academic positions at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Stefania has expertise in intergroup dynamics; her work explores ‘when’ and ‘why’ experiences with individual members of stigmatized groups affect the judgement of the stigmatized group as a whole. Her very early research investigated the benefits for intergroup relations of direct and indirect intergroup friendships in sectarian Northern Ireland. She has published extensively on the topics of intergroup contact and friendship, intergroup anxiety and emotions, negative contact and valence asymmetries, stereotype and prejudice reduction interventions. Stefania’s research spans post-conflict and peaceful societies; it is highly cited and has demonstrated impact beyond academia in high profile policy reports. Stefania is passionate about EDI issues in academia, science, and broader society reflected in several science, service, and community awards.

Optional cultural activities: Peace walls walking tour
13:30pm - 16:30pm
In post-conflict societies, specific locations like peace walls symbolize peace versus conflict, and inclusion versus division. This conference offers participants an optional cultural activity: a professional guided walking tour around Belfast's peace walls. This tour provides deeper insights into how places signify meaning and represent shared or divided views of the past and future.
