Social Psychology Annual Conference 2025
- Social and behavioural

About
The Social Psychology Section Annual Conference is set to take place from September 8 to 10, 2025, at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford. The central theme for this year's conference is Beyond Tribalism in Social Psychology: Bringing Together Diverse Research Traditions.
Social psychology aims to understand human behaviour in social contexts. To achieve this, we draw on a wide range of theories and epistemologies and use many different methodological approaches. Much of our research, however, exists in silos as we work with those within a similar theoretical, epistemological or methodological tradition as our own. Whilst this enables us to progress with important research agendas, it means that we can consequently miss out on exploring the wider conversations that may enable us to further our understanding of the core social psychological phenomena that we are all interested in.
The theme for the 2025 BPS Social Psychology Section conference, therefore, emphasizes the need to open up conversations across our various traditions in social psychology. We aim to facilitate dialogue between what might be viewed as sometimes competing perspectives—whether quantitative vs. qualitative, experimental vs. critical, or positivist vs. interpretivist—to understand how these different approaches could be considered in tandem to advance a holistic understanding of human behaviour in social contexts. We also aim to build opportunities for shared learning and collaborations across research traditions, geographical regions and career stages.
We invite papers spanning the full breadth of social psychology, theoretically and methodologically, including basic, applied and co-produced approaches to explore social psychological phenomena. We particularly welcome contributions that connect to the following subthemes:
- Social Psychology in Times of Challenge and Change
- New Methodological and Data Analysis Approaches in Social Psychology
- Cognitive and Neural Foundations of Social Processes
- Social Psychology for Sustainable and Digital Futures
- Developmental Science Perspectives in Social Psychology
We encourage submissions that adopt open research practices and those that promote global and diverse perspectives. We especially encourage symposia submissions that bring together presenters from different career stages, backgrounds and research traditions and that foreground the work of those earlier in their careers.
