Professor Virginia Braun
Talk Title: TBC
Bio: Virginia Braun (Ginny; she/her they/them) Professor in the School of Psychology at Waipapa Taumata Rau/The University of Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand, and an Ahurei/Fellow of Te Apārangi The Royal Society of New Zealand. A feminist and critical health psychologist, Ginny teaches around gender, sex and sexuality, and critical health psychology topics, and researches a wide range of gender, sexuality and health topics.
Ginny is most widely known as a qualitative methodological scholar, not least for the development of an approach to thematic analysis with Victoria Clarke – now known as reflexive thematic analysis. Award winning books with Victoria Clarke are Successful Qualitative Research: A Practical Guide for Beginners (Sage, 2013) – translated into Hindi and Marathi – and Thematic Analysis: A Practical Guide (Sage, 2022) – being
translated in Polish, Japanese and Farsi. They also edited (with Debra Gray) Collecting Qualitative Data: A Practical Guide to Textual, Media and Virtual Techniques (Cambridge, 2017) – translated into (Brazilian) Portuguese. Other qualitative methodologies they have explored (with others) include story completion and qualitative surveys, and currently (with Victoria) they are orienting to matters of quality in qualitative research. They have developed websites for both thematic analysis (www.thematicanalysis.net) and qualitative story completion (www.storycompletion.net).

QMiP is 20: An Oral History Event
As the Qualitative Methods in Psychology (QMiP) Section, celebrates 20 years, they invite you to join this oral history online event on the 23 May, 10 - 11:30am where they will collectively reflect on QMiP's legacy, the impact of the committee's leadership and the potential futures for qualitative research in psychology. This event is free to attend for BPS members.
This live discussion will feature a panel of previous – and current chairs – of QMiP:
- Anna Madill
- Rachel Shaw
- Peter Branney
- Joanna Brooks
- Simon Goodman
- Laura Kilby
- Sarah Seymour-Smith
There will also be written reflections shared by QMiP's first chair Zazie Todd.
This will be a unique opportunity to hear from those who helped shape QMiP; a chance to explore the Section's origins, challenges and successes. The event will be recorded and preserved in the BPS archive as a historical record and accessed by future researchers when researching the history of psychology. After hearing about our past, we hope you can then join us in Leeds from 9th - 10th July, as we continue our celebrations at the QMiP 2025 Annual Conference.
