About the event

The 2025 POWES conference will showcase feminist scholarship in a collegiate and friendly environment.
We would like to warmly welcome anyone interested in research on gender, sexuality and equality related topics, at any stage of their career.

This year, our conference themes are:
•    Resisting Violences
•    The Fabric of Freedom
•    Accelerating Activism

All three themes carry the thread of movement. The hope is that contributions to the conference can reflect and consider movements towards more understandings, methods of resistance and activism that enable movement towards freedom.

Keynote speakers

Dr Bipasha Ahmed, Independent Scholar, UK

Dr Parul Bansal, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, India

We would be delighted to consider submissions on these themes and from a range of areas relevant to the work of POWES. If you have a topic you would like to present on that falls outside of these themes, please still apply. POWES covers a wide range of topics that explore the impact of different identities on all areas of life. For inspiration on what you might present, have a look at our programme from last year: https://www.bps.org.uk/event/psychology-women-and-equalities-section-annual-conference-2024

Presentation formats include: oral presentations, workshops, craftivism/creative sessions, posters/visual displays and symposia.

Event location:

Milton Hill House,

How to submit

Please see below how to submit your submission.

All abstracts should be up to 250 words, not including the title. Abstracts need to clearly communicate to conference participants what will be covered in the session, and what to expect if the session includes activities.

We also ask presenters to consider guidance on making sessions accessible when planning presentations and activities. For example:

·       https://www.w3.org/WAI/teach-advocate/accessible-presentations/

For all abstracts, please include:

  • The topic of the submission
  • The type of work being presented (e.g. theoretical; empirical; reflexive; etc…)
  • The main content to be covered
  • How the work relates to the conference theme(s) if/where applicable

POWES works hard to make the process of submitting an abstract and getting it accepted as fair, supportive, and inclusive as possible. At the same time, reviewers have to make sure that submissions are appropriate for the conference.

Each submission is anonymously reviewed by POWES committee members according to established criteria and standards. Please note:

·       Submissions will be considered anonymously, based solely on the information provided.

·       Submissions will be considered only if they cover the required elements set out in the submission information.

From time-to-time, reviewers may feel that a particular submission lends itself to a different format to that which is proposed. In these cases, authors will be invited to consider an alternative format. In the case of symposia submissions, the refereeing procedure will include the package as a whole and the merit and importance of any individual contributions.

Authors will be notified of the reviewers' decision via email. Abstracts will either be accepted, accepted with revisions to content or suggested format, or not accepted.

When scheduling presentations, every effort will be made to accommodate timetable constraints specified at the time of submission. Please include any information about times at which you cannot present when submitting your abstract.

If successful, your submission may be considered suitable for a press release, timed to coincide with the conference. If this is so, a Press Officer will contact you to ask whether you wish your submission to be press released, and to discuss the content of the press release with you. To write an accurate press release, and to provide more information for journalists, you may be asked for additional information regarding your submission. Please note all papers and posters are under a media embargo until the day of presentation.
