An introduction to Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) for people with a personality disorder - an evidence-based approach
- Counselling and psychotherapy

Personality disorders are highly prevalent in mental health services and non-specialists find them difficult to assess.
Recent years have seen a number of evidence-based psychotherapies.
Working with this group can be challenging for professionals due to behaviour such as cutting, drug-use, alcohol, suicidality and anger.
Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is one of what has been termed the "big four" psychotherapies, alongside DBT, MBT and Schema Therapy.
Clinical experience shows that some patients respond well to one therapy and not another, and there is a strong case for offering a range of therapies.
TFP is growing internationally and is relatively new to the UK with a small but growing number of practitioners.
The problem the training would address is how to work effectively psychodynamically with clients who present particular challenges, such as poor engagement with therapy, clients who are withdrawn at home, and patients who are using self-destructive behaviour that undermines the work of therapy.
The benefit to the BPS and its members is that psychologists will learn about evidence-based specialist psychotherapeutic approach to working with people with a personality disorder.
