Connect with the BPS South East Branch as they explore the radical potential of Arts-Based research.

Arts-based research (ABR) can be broadly defined as research which uses tools, techniques and knowledge drawn from across a wide range of different artforms to inform data collection, analysis and/or dissemination. While this can sit relatively comfortably alongside mainstream theoretical frameworks and research models, it most commonly takes a critical stance towards these.

Accordingly, ABR can profoundly challenge dominant perspectives on what research should look like, who research should be for and who should have the authority to create knowledge, as well as troubling established distinctions between data collection, analysis and dissemination, and between research, participant and audience. Because of this, some have claimed that ABR represents a third methodological paradigm, to add to those of qualitative and quantitative methods. This session with Dr Helen Johnson explores the scope, potential and challenges of arts-based research as a radical research methodology, taking in, along the way, illustrative examples of ABR research and 'outputs' drawn from own work.
