Workshop 1 - Contract research and consultancy as a health psychologist

Often when we think about doing research we think of the big funders like NIHR and ESRC, but there are other ways to undertake valuable applied research and evaluation work, with built in impact. The Centre for Behavioural Science and Applied Psychology (CeBSAP) undertakes research applying health psychology to a wide range of real world problems, often through contract research with government agencies or local authorities.  The ways in which this is won and delivered within short timescales differs from traditional grant research. This workshop will draw on case study examples and our experiences to explain the process of identifying and bidding for work, project and client management, and the benefits and challenges of working in this way.  The workshop will be useful for anyone wanting to undertake contract and consultancy work, as part of their stage 2 qualification or in their job role.

Facilitators: Prof Maddy Arden and Dr Rachael Thorneloe, CeBSAP, Sheffield Hallam University

Workshop 2 - Conversations about difference

This interactive workshop will involve the 'rainbow of desire' based techniques to explore conversations around difference, identity and equality. The workshop would be suitable for anyone in the health psychology community who may wish to engage with how systemic social inequalities can show up in everyday situations, and how we may reflect and learn from these experiences to inform and influence our work in teaching, research and practice in health contexts.

Learning outcomes:

  • Participants will gain a better and more critical understanding of how difference and discrimination can shape everyday interactions
  • They will have the opportunity to reflect on how these interactions can influence our understandings and work on health-related topics in various contexts
  • They will learn about avenues for constructive change to support anti-discriminatory practice

Facilitator(s) – Kiran Bains, Nicki O'Brien
